“Marijuana arrived in Colombia thanks to the aid of the USA in 1930. Seven years before the USA made Marijuana illegal.. In 1930 the department of agriculture of the United States (USDA) created a project to promote the different uses of marijuana. United States knew that marijuana had immense medicinal potential and industrial. The USA did not want to use American lands so they decided to go to Colombia to develop the project. The Marijuana utilized for this project was brought from The Island of Borneo. Borneo and Colombia are very similar countries in question of environment. Both countries are situated in tropical rainy forests, the perfect environment to grow Marijuana and for this reason the USA chose Colombia for the project. Colombia is a very tropical country. In 1937 the USA made Marijuana illegal. The projects were canceled. The gringos that were working in Colombia on the project had to return but they never destroyed the plants. They left the ones that were working with in Colombia.” I'm researching the period 1910-1937 at the moment, 1910 being the start of the Mexican revolution and the large scale immigration of Mexicans into the US, this is probably when marijuana smoking first began to become popular in the US. US soldiers first learnt the habit of smoking marijuana in 1916-17 when chasing Pancho Villa, and also in Panama from 1916 onwards, US soldiers stationed there were smoking marijuana. I think it was these soldiers returning home who brought the knowledge of marijuana to the white population of the US, before this I think the only people who had seen peopel smoking marijuana were folks in Kentucky and elsewhere in the South who had seen the black fieldhands smoking the dried flowers of the hemp crops. Hemp was grown in Kentucky from the early days of the first farmers in the 1650s but they didn't smoke the flowers, they laid the hemp stocks out n the fields and left them while the flowers and leaves rotted away back into the soil, they were growing for fibre mostly, or for seed in some instances. I think it was probably the returning soldiers who first realised that the marijuana they were smoking down south of the border actually came from the familiar hemp plant. Perhaps soldiers brought home seeds from marijuana they had bought and grew them, only to discover they got hemp plants. then the penny dropped! Parke Davis the US pharmaceutical company did tests on Kentucky grown hemp flowers (Cannabis Americana as they called it) and discovered that the flowers of Kentucky hemp were just as psychoactive and potent in THC as the Cannabis Indica they were importing from India to make medicines with, so they did have drug cannabis in the US back then, just folks didn't know about it, to them, hemp was something you made rope and cloth from. I'm working on charting the rise of marijuana use in the US, in the 1920s it was something for the urban and rural poor, prohibition of alcohol helped it's popularity and Mezz Mezzrow and other Jazz figures like Louis Armstrong were important in spreading the stuff and alerting people to it's effects. But by 1937, most people still had no idea marijuana came from the good old hemp plant and it was this ignorance that allowed Anslinger to pass the Marijuana Tax Act, making it illegal. The 1930s, 40 and 50s were a time when only a tiny number of white people were smoking marijuana in the US, it wasn't until the 1960s that marijuana started to become widely known and popular among the white population, but don't let Sam Skunkman or anyone else kid ya that drug cannabis varietals we know today all come from California in the 1960s and 70s, they had been growing potent flowers down in Kentucky and the surrounding states for at least 300 years. Roadkill Skunk probably still exists down in Kentucky, I reckon it's an outdoor indica, not one single strain but rather a particular type of outdoor grown up in the hills by poor people, modern day moonshiners. The reason why RKS has been scarce since the mid 80s is the DEA, they began large-scale eradication efforts and commercial growing largely shifted indoors as a result. The strains being grown changed and even if you did grow the lines responsible for the RKS buds indoors, they wouldn't have the same all-pervading odour they did when grown outdoors. But there are still people growing small plots that will still be growing the same stuff they were back in the 80s so RKS genes will still be around. I believe that there is a strong link between the Kentucky hemp crops grown legally up until 1937 and the marijuana crops that sprang up in the same region in the 60s and 70s to feed the demand for marijuana. Parke Davis proved that in the 1910s Kentucky Hemp flowers were potent in THC, and given the long tradition of independence (the Civil War wasn't about slavery, it was about the men of the South objecting to being told what to do by the folks in Washington) in these parts, I simply do not believe that they stopped growing cannabis in 1937, just that the cultivation was driven underground, fibre production stopped (apart from the Hemp For Victory revival in 1942-45) but I'm sure there were many folks in the hemp growing counties that carried on growing patches of the stuff just to harvest the flowers for marijuana. I'm sure if you went to the remoter parts of Kentucky these days you would still find people growing the same seedlines their grandfathers and great-grandfathers were growing for hemp. I doubt any of these people has ever seen a seed catalogue or is even aware that there are cannabis seedbanks, their seeds will be local and probably been in the family for generations. I just don't believe the accepted history that has everything beginning in California in the 1960s, to be honest, I think the main reason why this has become the tale is that Sam Skunkman came from Cali and because the genes he took to Holland were all from Cali, that's become the accepted story. Things could have been very different though if a hillbilly from Kentucky had also gone to Holland in the 80s with the idea of breeding and selling genetics he brought from back home. Parke Davis proved Kentucky hemp was potent in THC in 1910. In 1980 the DEA found that (apart from a sample from Hawaii) that the most potent pot they seized came from Kentucky and they were finding and eradicating more marijuana fields in Kentucky than anywhere else except Hawaii. This indicates to me that Kentucky had maintained it's cannabis crops throughout the 70 intervening years.
